Good afternoon folks. Welcome to this week’s Tune Up, our roundup of all the latest news in social media. Here are our top stories:

Time spent on Google+ far behind Facebook

Google+ users spent an average of 6 minutes 47 seconds on the network during March, a figure that is positively ridiculed by the 6 hour 44 minute average that users spent  on Facebook. Whilst this does represent growth from the 3.3 minutes spent in February 2012, in contrast to Facebook’s dip from 7 hours 9 minutes in March 2012, the rate at which Google+ is catching up can be, by these figures at least, declared as insignificant.

Pinterest’s ‘Pin It Forward’ UK initiative

Pinterest has taken a step towards international growth with its ‘Pin It Forward’ UK initiative. The system will ‘foreground’ content to UK users and also include a British English language option, attempting to optimise the experience for UK users. The network has recruited 300 UK bloggers, who will be posting Pinterest-related blogs on their own websites in an attempt to attract more British users. The step seems to be the start of a wider programme, with plans to further improve the system in the UK and expand to other countries. France is apparently next on the horizon.

Target launch deals with Facebook

US retailer Target has produced a set of offers, which will automatically generate Facebook posts when claimed. Starting with around 700 discount offers and an expected reach of 1,000 people, the campaign is set to be hosted on a Target website called ‘Cartwheel’. Users can claim a deal at any point, producing a unique barcode that tracks every offer they claim. This barcode is then scanned at the checkout. Cartwheel works seamlessly with mobile, meaning that a discount can be claimed at any point in the process, even as you’re walking towards the checkout – an interesting use of social media promotion that retail brands would do well to take note of.

Facebook Home Finally Hits 1 Million Downloads

Facebook Home has hit 1 million downloads exactly one month after being released for Android, according to stats from the Google Play store. At Thursday’s press event, Facebook’s director of mobile engineering told reporters that Home had been downloaded “just about” 1 million times. On Sunday, Facebook Home was classified as having been installed 1 million – 5 million times in the Google Play Store. Facebook did not immediately respond to requests for comment about when it officially passed the 1 million mark.

Microsoft Improves Photo Management in Skydrive

Microsoft has introduced changes to SkyDrive to enhance management of photos in the cloud storage service, including more efficient viewing and uploading of files. The improvements offer a new “all photos” view that displays thumbnails of all the pictures, organised in a monthly timeline grid. Microsoft also tweaked both the SkyDrive desktop app and its server counterpart to increase upload speeds, achieving a 2X to 3X improvement, according to the company.
